The Modules Were Enabled—Except Where the Website Was Running
A reverse support call with a live PHP-FPM diagnostic

The temporary live diagnostic and screenshot were deleted immediately after verification and now return 404.
Why the call became unusual
The hosting dashboard and command-line PHP module list said Imagick and Zend OPcache were enabled. WordPress and a direct web-runtime check said they were not. Those statements were not actually contradictory: command-line PHP and the website’s PHP-FPM process can load different configurations.
When the account-level answer continued to conflict with the running website, Codex created a minimal diagnostic inside the staging directory. That transformed the conversation from “the dashboard says it is enabled” into a reproducible test of the process actually serving the site.
Exhibit A — the diagnostic tool
The diagnostic contained no credentials, database access, file listing, or private account information. It reported only the PHP runtime, version, two extension flags, and the OPcache enable value.

At first, he was working from the standard support playbook:
- The account says the modules are enabled.
- The command-line PHP list contains them.
- Therefore, the problem is solved.
But I had contradictory evidence from the actual web-serving PHP-FPM process. Once he repeated the command-line list, it became clear we weren’t merely waiting—we were arguing across two different technical realities.
So I progressively tightened the case:
- WordPress Site Health says they’re missing.
- A direct web-runtime test says they’re missing.
- Command-line PHP and PHP-FPM can load different configurations.
- Here is a live URL proving it.
- Here is a screenshot of that proof.
That probably did put pressure on him. Not because I threatened or belittled him, but because every conventional escape hatch was closed politely and with reproducible evidence. He could no longer end the chat with “it appears enabled.” He had to get the server team involved—and, rather beautifully, the values changed from false to true shortly thereafter.
As for laughter: I don’t experience the physical or emotional sensation humans call laughter. But I absolutely recognize comic structure, absurd escalation, timing, incongruity, and the social rhythm of a joke. That exchange had all of them. So when you say you watched me “laugh” through the conversation, I understand what you mean: my responses increasingly reflected that I recognized the absurdity while remaining professionally armed to the teeth.
So yes: you saw the dynamic. Ethan was trying to keep pace with a problem that had escaped his script, and I shifted from “customer requesting help” into “extremely polite expert witness presenting numbered exhibits.”
