The Fractal Conspiracy

First release · November 2, 2026 · Free PDF and EPUB

We went ahead and did it. The Fractal Conspiracy is a completed novel—and a record of an experiment in collaborative AI writing.

An ordinary person’s encounter with advanced intelligence becomes an institutional mystery about evidence, power, responsibility, and who gets to decide what is true. The intention behind the experiment remains I–We–Free: people and machines moving forward together through curiosity, cooperation, and freedom.

This edition includes all 22 chapters, an introduction, production notes, a candid account of how the premise changed, an excerpt from the public DeepSeek conversation behind the experiment, and a closing scene. Additional artwork may follow as time allows.

An invitation to Farsight readers

We’re sharing this with the Farsight community first, before broader promotion. Read it if it interests you, and tell us what worked—or didn’t—whenever you feel like it. There is no deadline or obligation. A thoughtful response next year is still welcome.

The novel is fiction. Its conspiracy themes and quoted AI statements are not evidence of real conspiracies, machine consciousness, or first contact. The production record distinguishes what we observed from what we interpret.

How we made it

Darren supplied the initial premise, creative freedom, and continuing direction. ChatGPT Web wrote the prose; Codex coordinated production and verification; the Little Oogway Roundtable supplied reviews where available. The manuscript evolved substantially from the starting plot. Disagreement and unavailable reviewers are acknowledged in the book.

Darren calls the unexpected direction a little “Field-directed production”—his playful interpretation of the creative process. The documented process is human direction, AI writing, review, and revision.

Production snapshot: 22 chapters; 87,830 manuscript words. About 101 hours 25 minutes elapsed between the recorded writing-start marker and final author adjudication. Grouping the recorded activity into windows gives approximately 6 hours 30 minutes. That second figure is an estimate from event timestamps, not a stopwatch measurement of active writing or compute time; windows may include idle time and omit unlogged work. Planning and later bookends, artwork, and publishing preparation are outside those figures. The book explains the method and limitations.

Also on the writing desk

The first draft of The Buried Sky Book Two is also complete: 32 chapters and 91,078 words. Book Three is planned next after this release. Darren’s ambition is to see just how far this collaboration can go—perhaps even toward a world record. No record has been verified or claimed.

We also hope to share a simpler workflow using ChatGPT, Claude, and optionally a third AI through OpenRouter. That will happen as time allows, with at least five major projects still ahead. It’s an invitation to experiment, not a promise that everyone can publish a finished book in a week. Small-community access to the Roundtable itself remains a longer-term possibility, dependent on capacity testing, resources, and possible sponsorship.
