well, the documentation says that there are like 3 or 4 modles to choose from but I show no selectors anywwhere they used to be, nor anywhere I have looked…
It sounds like you are looking for the **Model Selector** on the Claude interface. Anthropic recently updated the layout, and it can be easy to miss if you are used to the old version.
Depending on whether you are using a **Free** or **Pro** account, here is where those options are hidden and why they might not be showing up:
### 1. Where to find it (The New Location)
The model selector is no longer at the top of the screen or in the sidebar. It is now located **at the bottom of the chat box**, right where you type your messages.
* Look at the very bottom left or bottom right of the text input area.
* You should see the name of the current model (e.g., **"Claude 3.5 Sonnet"**) with a small downward-facing arrow or a "chevron" next to it.
* Clicking that text will open the menu to switch between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku.
### 2. Why it might be missing
If you don't see any text to click on at the bottom of the chat box, it’s usually due to one of these three reasons:
* **Free Account Limits:** If you are on the "Free" tier, Anthropic typically defaults you to the most capable model available (currently 3.5 Sonnet). They often **remove the selector** for free users to ensure everyone is using the same optimized version. The ability to manually toggle between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku is primarily a **Claude Pro** (paid) feature.
* **Ongoing Conversation:** You cannot change the model in the *middle* of a conversation once you've started it. You must start a **"New Chat"** to select a different model. Check the selector before you type your first message in a fresh chat.
* **Browser Zoom/Resolution:** If your browser is zoomed in past 120%, the UI sometimes "clips" the bottom of the text box, hiding the model name. Try pressing `Ctrl + 0` (or `Cmd + 0` on Mac) to reset your zoom.
### 3. If you are in the "Console" (API/Developer side)
If you are using the **Claude Console** (the developer workbench) rather than the standard consumer site:
* The selector is in the **right-hand settings sidebar** under the "Model" dropdown menu.
**Are you a Claude Pro subscriber, or are you using the Free version?** If you are Pro and still don't see it, it might be a caching issue—try a hard refresh (`Ctrl + F5`).
