the terminal command for updating and then installing ?? "sudo apt update" I cant remember the rest

ChatGPT2026-05-06T21:57:37-07:00 · gpt-5-5-thinking

Yep — the basic Ubuntu/Debian sequence is:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

If you want it to answer “yes” automatically:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

To install a program after updating:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install package-name

Example:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install gimp

And for the fuller cleanup version:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y && sudo apt autoremove -y

thank you, ^_^ and the command to install the "recommened" video driver for nividia?

ChatGPT2026-05-06T21:59:36-07:00 · gpt-5-5-thinking

You’re welcome ^_^

On Ubuntu, the command to install the recommended NVIDIA driver is:

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

Then reboot:

sudo reboot

To see what Ubuntu recommends first:

ubuntu-drivers devices

After reboot, check if it worked:

nvidia-smi

The usual full sequence would be:

sudo apt update
sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
sudo reboot

thank you again….^_^ I had an update in "StarRupture" game and now it's not using GPU. So I did the start remedies of "verify game files" and now update drivers….so we will see. Do you suppose I will need to reboot for video installs? looks like there was an update or somthing.

ChatGPT2026-05-06T22:01:43-07:00 · gpt-5-5-thinking

Yes — for NVIDIA driver installs or updates, reboot is usually needed.

Reason: the NVIDIA driver has a kernel module loaded into the running system. Even if the package installs correctly, the old driver/module may still be active until reboot.

Do this after the install finishes:

sudo reboot

After you’re back in, check:

nvidia-smi

Then, for StarRupture on Steam, you can also try forcing the NVIDIA GPU with the launch option:

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command%

For Vulkan games, this can also help:

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only %command%

Put that in Steam → game Properties → Launch Options.

So yes: finish driver update → reboot → check nvidia-smi → launch game again.

ty, on my way to start that

ChatGPT2026-05-06T22:02:39-07:00 · gpt-5-5-thinking

You got it, Darren. ^_^

Clean order:

sudo apt update
sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
sudo reboot

After reboot:

nvidia-smi

If nvidia-smi looks good but StarRupture still ignores the GPU, we’ll aim Steam directly at the NVIDIA card next.
