darren@maindesk:~/Desktop$ gnome-extensions list | grep gsconnect
gsconnect@andyholmes.github.io
darren@maindesk:~/Desktop$ so its listed as here but I still dont see it
Got it — thanks for the exact terminal output, that helps.
Since gsconnect@andyholmes.github.io is listed, the extension is installed. The issue is probably that it’s not enabled or not showing up because of the GNOME Shell extensions system. Let’s go step by step:
1. Check if it’s enabled
Run:
gnome-extensions info gsconnect@andyholmes.github.io
Look for the line:
State: ENABLED
If it says DISABLED, turn it on:
gnome-extensions enable gsconnect@andyholmes.github.io
2. Restart GNOME Shell
On Xorg you can press Alt+F2, type r, and hit Enter.
On Wayland (Ubuntu Noble defaults to Wayland), you can’t reload the shell like that — you’ll need to log out and back in.
3. Look for the indicator
Once it’s active, you should see a phone icon in the top-right system menu area. Sometimes on newer Ubuntu it hides under the Quick Settings menu (click the top-right corner → it may appear inside there).
4. Install integration packages if missing
Sometimes GSConnect won’t show unless the companion package is installed:
sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-gsconnect
(though your gnome-extensions list already shows it, so you likely have it.)
👉 Question: when you click the top-right corner menu (where Wi-Fi, battery, sound are), do you see a GSConnect entry inside, or is it completely absent?
hmmm i got it its running but its.. permanently searching for devices….do I need to install something on the phone/tablet?
Yes 👍 — GSConnect is just the desktop side of the bridge.
On your phone or tablet you’ll need the Android app KDE Connect (from F-Droid or Google Play).
Once it’s installed:
- Make sure both your phone/tablet and your PC are on the same Wi-Fi/LAN network.
- Open KDE Connect on the phone. It should see your Ubuntu machine in the device list.
- On the PC, GSConnect should now list your phone instead of just “searching.”
- Pair them from either side — you’ll get a confirmation dialog on the other device.
After that you’ll have messaging, file sharing, clipboard sync, notifications, etc.
💡 Quick check: Do you already have KDE Connect installed on your Android device, or should I walk you through the setup there?
