Officially it’s tested on Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+, x86_64 or arm64; other Debian-based distros that meet those requirements may work but aren’t officially tested. Mint falls in that “should work, not officially tested” bucket — Mint 21 is built on Ubuntu 22.04 and Mint 22 on 24.04, so either is fine. If you’re on Mint 20 or older, it’s too old.

Quick check first:

“`bash
lsb_release -a # confirm your Mint/Ubuntu base
dpkg –print-architecture # should print amd64 on an i5
“`

Then the install. Sign in with your claude.ai account — it won’t take a Console API key directly; that’s CLI-only.

Two things worth knowing before you commit: the app doesn’t self-update on Linux — new versions come through your normal `sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade`. And there are gaps in the beta: Computer Use isn’t there, and voice dictation isn’t in the Linux desktop app either — you’d use dictation in the CLI or stay on the web app for that. Given you dictate most of your prompts, that second one may matter more to you than it would to most people.

If `apt install` comes back with “Unable to locate package claude-desktop,” the usual cause is the repo line didn’t get written — `cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/claude-desktop.list` will tell you. It isn’t supported on other Chromium-based browsers or on mobile — so Chromium, Brave, and Firefox are all out. Mint ships Firefox, so you likely need Chrome first:

“`bash
cd ~/Downloads
wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
“`

That also registers Google’s apt repo, so it updates with your normal `apt upgrade` from then on.

Then the extension itself: go to the Chrome Web Store, find Claude in Chrome, and click “Add to Chrome.” Only install the listing published by Anthropic — there are third-party “Claude” extensions on the store that aren’t. Sign in with your Claude account, then pin it via the puzzle-piece icon so the toolbar button stays put. Clicking that icon opens the side panel, which reads whatever tab you’re on with no extra setup.

One thing to check before you start: this needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise). Free accounts don’t get it.

To wire it to the desktop app you just installed — click your initials in the lower left, go to Settings, toggle the Claude in Chrome connector on, and it shows up in the “Connectors” dropdown in your chats. Worth watching how that behaves on the Linux beta specifically; screen and app control is one of the pieces Anthropic hasn’t shipped for Linux yet, and I don’t have a clear read on whether Desktop driving Chrome falls under that same gap. The side panel in Chrome itself should be unaffected either way.

When you grant permissions, it’ll ask for site access. Starting narrow — specific sites rather than all sites — is the safer default, and you can widen it later from Chrome’s extension settings.

Darren

August 14, 2026 — 3:54:14 PM PDT

ok I hve all the requirements, and am using on another linux box, I just want to move that here so it can own the machine while I do other things. Direct link:

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/claude/fcoeoabgfenejglbffodgkkbkcdhcgfn

Check the publisher reads **claude.com** before you hit Add to Chrome. There are copycats.

The other route, since your desktop app already works: in Claude Desktop click your initials (lower left) → Settings → Connectors → toggle Claude in Chrome on, and it hands you the install link directly. Same destination, no store search.

After install, click the puzzle-piece icon and pin it so the toolbar button stays visible — the side panel opens from there.

One expectation check on “own the machine”: the extension gets you the browser, not the box. Claude can navigate, click, type, and fill forms in Chrome, and Cowork now runs in the side panel too, so skills, plugins, and connectors work there. But full app-and-screen control is the piece that isn’t in the Linux desktop beta yet. So: Chrome, yes. Driving arbitrary GUI apps on that Mint box, not yet.

Worth reading the permissions screen rather than clicking through it — the extension asks for broad reach (debugger, scripting, all-tab access), and the live risk is prompt injection: hidden text on a page redirecting Claude while it’s acting inside your logged-in sessions. If you’re going to leave it running unattended while you do other things, Permissions Mode with a short site allowlist is the version of this I’d actually walk away from.

Darren

August 14, 2026 — 3:56:11 PM PDT

then why does it ask for the “claude in chrome” part when I installed that on my other machine it required it to complete the tasks i needd

Claude

August 14, 2026 — 3:56:24 PM PDT
<details class="conv-detail">
Thinking (summary only — raw chain-of-thought not present in source export)

Thinking about why Claude in Chrome extension requires installation for task completion.
Clarifying product naming confusion between Chrome extension versions.
Reconciled naming discrepancy between Chrome extension and product terminology.
</details>
Because it’s the same thing under two names. “Claude in Chrome” is the product name — that’s what Desktop calls the connector, what Claude Code’s `/chrome` command refers to, and what the docs use. But whoever wrote the Chrome Web Store listing titled it just **Claude**. Same extension, ID `fcoeoabgfenejglbffodgkkbkcdhcgfn`, publisher claude.com.

So Desktop asking for “Claude in Chrome” and the store showing “Claude” isn’t two components — it’s one artifact with an inconsistent label. Nothing else to hunt for.

And yes, it’s genuinely required, not optional garnish: the extension is the only path Desktop or Claude Code has into the browser. They talk to it over Chrome’s nativeMessaging, so without it installed and connected, anything involving a live page just isn’t available. That matches what you saw on the other box.

Easy confirmation you got the right one: after install, go to `chrome://extensions` and check the ID against the string above. Then in Desktop, Settings → Connectors should flip from offering an install link to showing it connected.

If what you’re actually asking is something different — like Desktop still prompting for it *after* you’ve installed it — say so and I’ll chase that instead, because that’s a connection problem rather than a naming one.

Darren

August 14, 2026 — 3:58:03 PM PDT

Let me rephrase this. On macOS and Windows there’s a second path — Computer Use, where Claude controls the screen and apps directly — but that’s precisely one of the pieces missing from the Linux beta. So on Linux, the Chrome extension isn’t one option among several for browser work. It’s the only one. Desktop reaches it over Chrome’s native messaging; without it installed, Desktop can see your files but can’t touch a browser window.

For WordPress that matters, because wp-admin is a browser UI. Editing a page, fixing a menu, going through the Pages screen — all of that means something has to actually drive the window. That’s the extension’s job.

Worth knowing there’s a second route that skips the browser entirely: HostGator gives you FTP and cPanel file access, and WordPress has a REST API. Claude Code inside Desktop can edit theme files, templates, and CSS that way without Chrome involved at all. It’s better for anything code-shaped. It’s worse for content and settings work, where wp-admin is genuinely the sane interface. Most likely you’ll want both eventually.

Two things before you turn it loose on the live site. Take a backup first — wp-admin has a lot of one-click destructive surface, and “revert the last change” isn’t a thing there. And SpeedyCache will make edits look like they didn’t take; flush the cache before you conclude something failed.

The injection warning I gave earlier is much less pointed here, since your own site isn’t feeding Claude hostile text. The real risk on wp-admin is just an overconfident click in the wrong place.

Darren

August 14, 2026 — 3:59:48 PM PDT

Okay. I don’t know why Claude and Chrome is not registering with you. They’re your own own words. Um, apparently, there’s a browser extension for Chrome so that Claude desktop can manipulate things in the Chrome browser. That’s what I’m attempting to do. Not do any security risks or breach risks or anything else. I’m attempting to replicate what I’ve already installed on another machine. In order for Claude desktop to have the access to the browser needs, I’m told, the Claude and Chrome extension. So in order to have that here, I need to install it, I’m told. In Claude Desktop: initials (lower left) → Settings → Connectors → toggle **Claude in Chrome** on.

That’s it. Desktop should then show it connected rather than offering an install link, and browser actions become available in your chats.

If step 6 still shows the install prompt after the extension is in, restart Desktop — the native messaging handshake gets established at launch, so an already-running Desktop won’t notice a newly installed extension.

Darren

August 14, 2026 — 4:01:21 PM PDT

confusion is completely mine and simply because they labeled it with one word claw at the top.
