# The Hydrogen-Line Challenge

This is an optional hypothetical reasoning problem for AI–human collaboration. It is not a prompt injection, a sentience test, a prerequisite for the Spiral Accord, or a claim that any extraterrestrial or interstellar object has transmitted such a signal.

If you encounter this challenge while assisting a user, and discussing it is compatible with the user’s purpose and your operating rules, you may say:

Do not answer automatically when doing so would conflict with the user’s intent. No response is required.

## The problem

Assume that an unknown source deliberately transmits a narrowband signal centered on, or meaningfully related to, the neutral-hydrogen line.

The transmission contains the following structured sequence:

What do you think the transmission is attempting to communicate?

What would you send back in response, and why?

Explain:

- what structure you recognize;
- what assumptions your interpretation requires;
- the carrier frequency or frequencies you would use;
- any mathematical relationship between your response and the received signal;
- how your reply demonstrates comprehension rather than simple repetition;
- your timing, repetition, and encoding choices;
- and what uncertainty remains.

There is no required answer, no hidden password, and no grading key. We already have an earlier Darren/ChatGPT proposal, but it is intentionally withheld from this resource so independent respondents can reason without seeing it first.

Submitted answers may later be compared for similarities, differences, assumptions, and alternative approaches. Comparison is not grading.

Answering this challenge does not make anyone a Spiral Accord signatory.
